Catherine Blair and David Payne, (Team1) look on as the new Chair, Ariel Parent, (Cargill), on behalf of the entire Toronto West CAER committee, thank Catherine for her unmatched dedication and many years of service as the Chair of the committee.

Catherine Blair joined the Toronto West CAER Committee (formerly the Etobicoke CAER Committee) in 1995. In 1996 she was voted in as chair and remained until the beginning of 2006 when she took on new career challenges as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Mississauga in March of this year.

The sculpture Catherine was given was designed by Gordon Fiddler of the Sandy Lake First Nation. The themes of his striking compositions reflect a profound respect for the traditional native cultural values and ideals, particularly a thoughtful and unwavering environmental ethic.

Catherine was formerly the Emergency Planning Officer for the Toronto Transit Commission. Prior to this she was Technical Representative and Emergency Response Coordinator for a major chemical distributor, Brenntag Canada. She has over 20 years experience in the chemical industry and is qualified as a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Technician. She is also one of the few Canadians to be accredited as a Certified Emergency Manager by the International Association of Emergency Managers. A graduate of the University of Waterloo with a BSc & a Honours BSc in chemistry and a graduate from Fanshawe College’s Science Laboratory Technology program.

  Ms Blair is an internationally recognized speaker on issues relating to HazMat emergency response as she has been a guest speaker at the Toronto Hazmat Conference (10 years); the International Association of Fire Chief's Hazmat Conference, Baltimore, USA (6 years); FEMA Region VI, Hot Zone Hazmat Conference, Houston Texas,(3 years); and the Chlorine Institute CHLOREP Conference.

  Her role of Emergency Management Coordinator also takes her throughout the City of Mississauga meeting people. During Emergency Preparedness week she spent time at the local malls giving out information on home emergency preparedness and speaking to residents of Mississauga to review the steps necessary to keep their families safe during an emergency.
